How to Play Blackjack with Surrender for Real Money
Blackjack is a hugely popular online and offline casino table game that’s based both on skill as well as luck. Also known as 21, Blackjack is played between the player and dealer. The player places a bet and then both are dealt two cards. The player’s cards face up while the online dealer has a card face down.
In offline casino games of Blackjack, a standard 52-deck of cards is normally used, whereas online casinos usually include multiple decks. In this version of Blackjack, six decks are used.
Each card has a value between 1 and 11. The aim of the game is to use two or more cards to get as close to 21 as possible, without going over, a process which is known as going ‘bust’.
Card Values
Cards 2 to 10 are worth their face values and Jacks, Queens and Kings have a value of 10. Aces have a value of either 1 or 11, with 11 being the default value unless a player exceeds 21. In this case, the value reverts to 1.
When a player is initially dealt an Ace and a 10 value card it is called a Blackjack or ‘natural’ and beats all other hands. If both the player and dealer have a hand of the same value, neither wins and the bet is returned.
Bet Placing
Bets are placed by putting forward the number of chips you wish to wager, before the initial two cards are dealt. The dealer is required to keep drawing cards until they reach a hand of at least 16. When the dealer has a hand of 17 or more, they must ‘stand’, that is, no more cards can be dealt to them.
Betting Options
In Blackjack with Surrender, when dealt your cards you have the option to:
Stand – stay with the cards you have
Hit – be dealt another card
Double Down – place a second bet to receive one more card after the first two cards were dealt
Split – if both your first two cards have the same value, you may split the hand into two separate hands and will receive another card on each
Surrender – after receiving the first two cards, you may give up your hand and throw the cards away, at which point half your bet will be returned to you
Insurance can also be bought when the dealer has an Ace as their first card, to protect you from a loss.
Winning at Blackjack
Once your bets have been placed, your hand value is less than 21 and you’ve elected to Stand, the dealer will stand or hit for more cards. Their cards are then revealed and the winner is whoever has a total value closest to 21, without exceeding it.
Payouts and winnings vary depending on the bets placed, the actions taken and the result of the hand.
